Mot Testing

What is an MOT?

Any vehicles which are driven on the road must be in a roadworthy condition. The MOT Test is designed to check that your vehicle is compliant with both road safety and environmental standards.
The vehicle’s condition is assessed on the day of the test based on set parameters designed to check it’s road worthiness.  If the vehicle fails the test you will receive a list of remedial actions which need to be done in order to ensure that the vehicle successfully passes the test.

The Nominated Tester will also inform you of any “advisory” items.  These are items which are adequate enough to meet the test requirements but will require attention in the future.

Accredited MOT Test Centre

1st 4 Garage Services is an approved MOT testing centre.  Our MoT Nominated Testers are accredited by DVSA (formerly VOSA) to assess your vehicle against specific safety criteria and to pass it as being to the required standards or requiring remedial action. The acceptable standards are as recorded in the current Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA, formerly VOSA) Vehicle Inspection Manual.

Does my Car need an MOT?

An MOT test is required for all cars on the third anniversary of registration.  An MOT is only valid for a twelve month period and must be renewed annually, unless the vehicle is no longer roadworthy and is stored off the road.

If you are not sure when your MOT Test is due, why not use our MOT Test Date Calculator to check the date?

Can an MOT Test be done early?

Your vehicle can be MOT tested up to 1 day less than a month in advance of the due date. This is recommended as it allows you plenty of time to undertake any remedial action, if there is any required.

What happens if my MOT has expired

If your MOT has expired you are not allowed to drive your vehicle on the road, and you could be prosecuted for doing so.

The only exception to this is if you’ have booked an MOT and are driving your vehicle to the test centre.

What Documents are Required?

When taking your car for its MOT, you will only need your vehicle and a means of payment.

If presented one day less than a month from the old Mot expiring the time will be automatically added on to your Mot. If you present the vehicle earlier than this it will loose the additional time and be dated from the day presented.

What Happens if a Car Fails its MOT

If the vehicle fails its MOT it indicates that it does not meet the legal requirements to be on the road.  If you wish to continue driving it on the road you will need to undertake the recommended repairs and get the car retested to prove that it complies with the MOT test standards. The notes on the back of the MOT report will detail what repairs are required.

Appealing Against the MOT Results

If for any reason you feel that the Nominated Tester has been unfair then it is possible to lodge an appeal by completing a VT17 form.
